The Importance of Servicing Your Motorhome

The Importance of Servicing Your Motorhome

06.10.22

1.   Why should you service your motorhome?

Ensuring that your motorhome undergoes regular servicing is essential for several reasons. In the same way as a car or motorbike, having your motorhome serviced keeps you, your passengers and other road users safe by addressing faults before they become dangerous. Just like other vehicles, motorhomes are subjected to wear and tear. If your motorhome hasn’t been used regularly, a service is important because parts may have become faulty since it was last out on the road. Therefore it’s crucial to get those parts fixed or replaced ahead of your next trip.

2.   How often should you have a service?

When vehicles are not adequately maintained, there can be further problems over time. Though it’s sometimes argued that services can be booked in according to mileage, here at Continental we recommend that you have your motorhome serviced annually, in what is known as a motorhome habitation service which will keep everything in check.

3.   What does a habitation service involve?

This service refers to the habitation areas of your motorhome, covering all aspects of the living space:

  • The water, gas, heating and electrical systems will all need to be thoroughly checked given the risks involved with these types of faults. This includes all items associated with these systems such as ovens, fridges, toilets and electrical sockets.
  • Moving components such as doors, locks and windows are checked to assess how efficiently they operate.
  • The smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors will also be tested and checked to ensure they are still functioning correctly and in date.
  • Ventilation systems, such as rooflights and fixed vents are opened and closed to look for any obstructions or faults.

4.   Motorhome MOTs

Here at Continental we now offer motorhome MOTs. We offer class 4, 5 and 7 MOTs at our centre in South Wales, depending on the weight of your vehicle (for motorhomes, you usually require class 4). Our MOT service accepts all vehicles up to 5000kg – this is great given that the majority of motorhomes are designed to sit at 3500kg or less. Like with a car, MOTs for a motorhome involve an overall inspection to check that everything is in good working order. This includes checking tyres are fully inflated and damage free, as well as all vehicle lights and the braking capacity of the motorhome. This is a legal requirement and should be carried out every year by a professional. Call our team to get booked in today.

Why choose Continental?

It’s best to get your annual motorhome service done at an ‘Approved Workshop’ as part of the National Caravan Council (NCC) workshop scheme. Continental is a member of this highly respected scheme, giving you the ultimate peace of mind when it comes to the service we provide:

  • Our workshop technicians complete continuous training and tests from the major caravan and motorhome manufacturers to make sure that they are up to date on specialist knowledge and can undertake services to the highest standard.
  • Visiting a trusted workshop ensures your own safety given the rigorous checks we carry out, whilst it also makes sure that your motorhome’s warranty remains valid.
  • As an NCC workshop, we are inspected every year by a team of independent assessors and must prove that we are compliant with the rigorous safety standards put in place.
  • If you own a motorhome which is one of our specialist manufacturers – either Auto-Trail, Roller Team or Bailey – we’ve got you covered. It’s always best to take your motorhome to a dealership which stocks your make. If faults are found during the service, we have access to the correct replacement parts. We also stock additional parts by Swift.

As we come into winter, there is no better time to book in for your motorhome habitation check as we are less busy during this period. Simply give us a call or use our contact form for all service enquiries.
