Not usually, it depends on the weight of the vehicle. If your campervan weighs 3,500 kg or less, you can drive it with a standard UK category B driving licence. This limit covers most small to mid-size campervans. However, there are some larger and heavier vehicles and you will need a category C1 licence to drive these. Older drivers who passed their test before 1997 might automatically have C1 entitlement on their licence, but newer drivers often need to take a separate test to achieve it.
Yes, it is. Most modern campervans handle much like regular vans or large cars. Handling is intuitive, visibility is good thanks to generous mirrors and the driving itself is smooth once you’ve become accustomed to the size. With familiarity, campervan driving becomes a comfortable, stress-free and highly enjoyable experience.
Yes, you should. In the event of finding yourself in an unfortunate situation, a fully equipped campervan should include a good first-aid kit, fire extinguisher and blanket, smoke & CO alarms, torch, basic tool-kit, portable battery/jump-starter, high-visibility vests and a warning triangle. In addition, packing bottled water, emergency food, tow strap, whistle and thermal blankets is a smart move.
