How to Extend The Life of Your Motorhome’s Leisure Battery

Posted: 5th November 2025 (Last updated 2 weeks ago) Written By Iwan Lewis

Your motorhome’s leisure battery is the heart of your onboard power system, keeping lights on, fridges cool, and devices charged when you’re off-grid. Yet, many owners only think about their battery when it fails to hold a charge. With a little care and attention, you can dramatically extend its lifespan and get the most out of every trip.

Here’s how to keep your leisure battery in top condition all year round.

Keep It Charged - Even When Not in Use

A leisure battery naturally loses charge over time, even when it’s not powering anything. Leaving it flat for long periods can cause sulphation, which permanently reduces its capacity.

To prevent this:

  • Recharge regularly, ideally every 4–6 weeks if your motorhome is in storage.
  • Use a smart charger that automatically adjusts the charge rate and can be left connected without risk of overcharging.
  • If you have access to mains power, consider installing a maintenance charger to keep the battery topped up during winter months.
Store It Correctly Over Winter

Cold weather is tough on batteries. If you won’t be using your motorhome for several months, it’s best to prepare it properly:

  • Fully charge the battery before storage.
  • Disconnect it from the vehicle to avoid slow discharge from onboard systems.
  • Store it in a cool, dry place – extreme temperatures (hot or cold) will shorten its life.
  • Check the charge every few weeks and top up as needed.

If you prefer to leave the battery connected, make sure your vehicle’s electrical system is switched off and use a quality battery conditioner to maintain optimum voltage.

Avoid Deep Discharge

The deeper you discharge your leisure battery, the shorter its lifespan. Most standard lead-acid batteries shouldn’t be discharged below 50% of their capacity.

  • Keep an eye on your voltage levels – many motorhomes have built-in monitors.
  • Recharge before the battery gets too low, especially when running power-hungry appliances like heaters or fridges.
  • If you regularly camp off-grid, consider upgrading to a lithium battery, which can tolerate deeper discharges without damage.
Check Connections and Ventilation

Corroded terminals or loose connections can prevent your battery from charging properly.

  • Inspect cables, terminals, and clamps regularly.
  • Clean off any corrosion using a mix of baking soda and water.
  • Make sure your battery is securely mounted and well-ventilated, especially if it’s not a sealed type.

Good ventilation also helps to dissipate heat and gases produced during charging, improving safety and performance.

Use Power Efficiently

Reducing your power draw helps your leisure battery last longer between charges and extends its overall life.

  • Swap halogen bulbs for low-energy LEDs.
  • Unplug chargers and appliances when not in use.
  • Use solar panels to trickle-charge your battery during the day.

Even small changes can make a big difference over time.

Know When It’s Time to Replace

Even with the best care, batteries don’t last forever. Most will perform well for around five years, depending on usage and maintenance. Signs it may be time to replace yours include:

  • Needing to recharge more frequently.
  • Rapid voltage drop under load.
  • Swelling or leakage around the casing.

If in doubt, have your battery tested during your next motorhome service – our technicians can check its health and recommend the right replacement for your setup.

Keep Your Adventures Fully Charged

By following these simple steps, you’ll keep your leisure battery performing reliably for longer, saving you money and avoiding unwanted power issues on the road.
